The Austrian born painter Maximilian Liebenwein became widely known for his paintings and illustrations in the style of Art Nouveau. Born in Vienna, Liebenwein showed interest in poetry, legends and nature from an early age and studied at the Schottengymnasium in Vienna. In 1887 he was able to enroll at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna but rather studied animals at the Tiergarten Schönbrunn with his supporting uncle.
When studying in Karlsruhe, Liebenwein met Heinrich von Zügel who would become his teacher for several years. In 1896, some of the artist’s illustrations appeared in the Art Nouveau magazine Jugend and he became highly involved with the Vienna Secession in the early 1900’s. Liebenwein volunteered for military service in 1914 but continued to paint despite the ongoing war. Executed the same year is the auction’s vivid composition “Eve in Paradise”, depicting Eve standing in a paradise landscape surrounded by wild animals. A larger sized work titled “Eve in Paradise” (Private Collection) was created by Liebenwein the same year, suggesting the present work to be a preperatory study for the larger version. Another preparatory work is shown in the catalogue for the Maximilian Lieberwein exhibition at Oberösterreichische Landes Museen in Linz 2006; “Maximilian Liebenwein: Ein Maler zwischen Impressionismus und Jugendstil”.
